As a union member of the NALC since the year 1994 and months after my initial employment, I value participation. My first
feeling of involvement was when Spartanburg Branch 439 officers filed an Article 7/Maximixation grievance on behalf of the PTF's resulting
in my promotion to full time employment within 7 months of being hired. Attendance at local meetings earns the privilege of being
selected as a delegate to attend state functions. At these state functions I learn various aspects of the USPS/NALC contract whereas
we review reports and we study interpretive language under the guidance of national officers.
My first National Convention was in Chicago with Branch 439. I was truly impressed with the massive (9,000) number of delegates
present under one roof. Then there were all those votes on proposals and resolutions with split votes and challenges while all being
conducted orderly.
My years of service has included in part, Safety Captain, Customer Connect Coordinator, Convention Chaplain, District Liaison,
Congressional District Liaison, Food Drive Coordinator, Shop Steward, and branch Vice-President. There still is times that I feel more
can be done to serve our great union. We have members that may lack that motivation to promote a better organization. Those of us
that are in leadership positions know what I am saying. Sometimes I wonder what my job would be like if history did not contain the
unselfish acts and sacrifice of the union brothers and sisters decades before us. Do you remember the ones that dared to push for
changes during the Reorganizational Act of 1970? Our most recent HR22 victory that relieved the Post Office of some billions of dollars in
losses was the result of participating union members in the legislative front. Does anyone not enjoy the privilege of union representation,
permanent wage increases, no lay off clause, and a host of other contract rights and benefits?
I will tell you what, my friend; If you believe there is not a position for you in this great union, then come see me and I will show you
where you are truly needed. If you are not a union member, now is the time to join.

What is all the fuss about? It is all about management forseeing a 5 Day Delivery as the only possible
answer to the current revenue loss where we may end up with a up with a minus $7,000,000 by the end of
the fiscal year (Oct. 2009).
I don't see how the 5 Day workweek is in the best interest of america, USPS, and much less the City
Carrier Craft. The way we forsee it, once we give in and give up the Saturday Delivery, we will probably
never get it back. America does business on a Six Day workweek. So, who will it be that will step in and
take up the business and residential customers we currently deliver to on Saturdays?
I am hoping that our union members are opening up the pages of the Postal Record and The Postal
Bulletin. Our staff at the National Headquarters reported the USPS expects 25,000 city letter carriers will
have to lose their jobs when and if the 5 Day Delivery is implemented. It disturbs me when I hear managers
suggest that everything is a done deal. What happen to making an effort in making a difference by means
of good management.
The best advice I heard this week was when I heard a man of god say, "All you Letter Carriers better begin
speaking loudly about your services, your job, and about the postal service becoming more creative in their
business models. You have to make yourselves heard!"
My Union Brothers and Sisters, we can stand up and be counted! We can let our voices be heard and
we can stand firm! We can tell the world not to allow the 5 Day Delivery materialize.
1. HR 22 is still on the table;
2. Let's keep the viability of Universal Delivery;
3. Let's keep Six Day Delivery;
Please consider the issues and get out to the Town Hall Meetings that are being hosted by our elected
officials next week.

Message:
I just want to thank everyone at the state convention for your part in making it happen. Those that taught, informed, presented,
organized, auctioned, danced, registered, wrote or phoned their representative, gathered donations, bagged convention items,
directed, prayed, participated, gave money, supported the auction, screamed, "HIP! HIP! HURRAY!" (3 TIMES, AT THE TOP OF YOUR
LUNGS),spoke for their fellow brothers and sisters that are now passed, worked on a committee, said good morning with a smile
and for just giving of your time and energy. This proves one thing to me. We are starting to think more along the same page. We
are starting to get a better grasp of the issues that face us in the eye and stand in our way. Brothers and sisters we may have
just fixed that one tire that was going to give us trouble when we least expected it. You know what I mean. (mentioned it in my April
article.) I have a notion that we are getting a finer edge on our problem solving skills. Tune in for more a little later.

The 2009 State Convention in Greenville, S.C. sponsored by the Executive Board was succesfull. We renewed our committment to keep in the battle for our jobs and our union. We got one more co-sponsor for H.R. 22. that will be Congressman Bob Ingles. It came as a big surprise on saturday morning to hear our new legislative liasion say Congressman Ingles got on board as of the night before. Especially since some of us were on the phone on friday to make our continued push for H.R. 22. Lets keep on keeping on, my Brothers and Sisters.

It is not every day that we have an opportunity to let ourselves be heard and it make any kind of difference. Too many times we will look back and ask ourselves "why didn't I do something about that?" You know what I am talking about. You know that your car tire is almost flat, but because you have to make that appointment you ignore it only to be horrified that you are sitting beside on a busy interstate in site of the insane asylum which has a torn place on the high security fence. Now it is late at night an you don't have a spare tire. Well my friend, in my vision of where South Carolina Letter Carriers presently stand on our involvement of issues at hand is, it feels like we are about to have a flat tire.
Can somebody tell me has anyone written, E-mailed, or called Congressman Bob Ingles for his support on House Bill H.R. 22? Can anyone tell me if we are communicating the importance of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) to legislators or fellow co-workers? How about that 5 Day Work Week? Who is willing to be first to be pushed off their assignment for a massive bidding process or even worse, fall into the mudhole? It does not feel like anyone is preparing to buy that spare tire anytime soon. However, while I wait, I will write another letter to my Congressman. Maybe he will write me back this time or even commit to co-sponsor H.R. 22.

EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT (EFCA)
MOST OF YOU HAVE HEARD OF IT, LOOK IN THE JUNE – AUGUST POSTAL RECORD FOR A TEAR OUT - MAIL IN FORM. LIKE ANY PROPOSED LEGISLATION, IT HAS TO GET SPONSORS AND THEN INTRODUCTION INTO THE HOUSE AND THEN THE SENATE AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE ENACTED AS A MAJOR PIECE OF LAW THAT WILL TAKE AWAY THE FEAR OF TALKING “UNION” IN THE WORK PLACE.
I AM IN FAVOR OF THIS PROPOSAL BECAUSE I AM CONVINCED THAT IF IT WERE NOT FOR A STRONG GROUP PULLING FOR FAIR WAGES AND DECENT WORKERS BENEFITS FOR THE CITY LETTER CARRIERS IN THE RECENT NEGOTIATIONS, WE CERTAINLY WOULD BE TALKING A DIFFERENT TALK RIGHT ABOUT NOW WHEN MANAGERS ARE LOOKING AT WHAT AND WHOM TO CUT OUT IN ORDER TO MAKE THE ECONOMIC PICTURE PRETTIER.
THEREFORE WE WHO ARE ABLE TO BE STRONG AND HAVE A LEG TO STAND ON NEED TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF INFLUENCING THE POWERS TO BE THAT THE REST OF THIS NATIONS MIDDLE CLASS ALSO DESERVES A CHANCE TO A DECENT MEANS TO MAKE A LIVING. WE NEED TO ACT NOW, BEFORE THE MIDDLE CLASS EVAPORATES AWAY INTO THE PAGES OF HISTORY.
I AM A WORKING CLASS CITIZEN OF THIS GREAT COUNTRY AND I DO NOT WANT TO BE THE LAST OF THE MIDDLE CLASS BECAUSE ONCE I AM THEN IT WILL SO SIMPLE TO ERASE ME INTO THOSE PAGES OF WHAT ONCE WAS GOOD AND DECENT AND REPLACE IT WITH CONTRACTING OUT, PART TIME, MEDIOCRE.
THE EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT WILL GIVE THIS NATIONS WORKING CLASS PEOPLE A LIFE RAFT SO NEEDED IN THE STORMS THAT KEEP WEARING AWAY AT THE BONDS OF THE SHIP CALLED ECONOMIC PROSPIERITY.
